The voice of Spanish cinema Luz Casal: "When I detect a liar, I pass him"

It's the soundtrack to "High Heels" and "The Sea Inside".There is Goya. And now tickets for the festival's two final concerts are sold out.

Luz Casal's voice is, in a way, the voice of Spanish cinema. This one from 'High Heels': Miguel Bosé plays, Marisa Paredes glassy-eyed when she receives a letter from her daughter in prison. Also from "The Sea Inside," which won an Oscar, and Javier Bardem turns into Ramón Sampedro when he plays "Negra Sombra," Rosalía de Castro's poem that makes a pit in your stomach. From Goya that he stole from Joaquín Sabina for 'Your animated forest'.He is the most cinematic of our singers: a stage animal with little or nothing to do away from the stage. But don't run around the bush." Are you comfortable?"someone asked him during the photo session.Because there is some urgency in Luz not to get involved in the wild webs of the past, to press on the present day: many health problems, many native plants that take steps halfway around the world to let the wind blow behind them, now that they have put a sign in his name: "I don't hold back".

This Sunday he returns to the Cervantes Theater to offer the final concert of the Malaga Festival. The 'no tickets' sign was immediately placed, forcing the organization to organize a second evening, and all tickets were also sold out.He plays at home, and not just because he spends a large part of the year in Malaga and has family ties. There is a lot of Mediterranean in this woman who grew up on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea and who now presents 'Me voy a permit', a wonderfully eclectic and unclassifiable career: an exercise in freedom that demonstrates her ability not only to interpret the songs, but also to inhabit them.Pure cinema.

- Your career, in one way or another, was related to cinema.

–Especially after the collaboration with Pedro Almodóvar in 'Tacones Distancias'.Then came the songs I did for 'El Bosque Animate' with Pablo Guerrero, 'Negra Sombra', an adaptation of 'Amado Mio'...

- There is a special history that he always remembers...

- April 16, 1991, when I recorded "Think of Me" and "One Year of Love".It was a moment of joy.I can't describe it any other way.I felt full, I didn't go through the studio door... and look, it was a big wooden door.Because it was a commitment, it was a responsibility, but I felt we did a good job.

- Do you think you have pushed the boundaries with those songs?

- Those are two unexpected orders. On the one hand, 'Think of me', which I still think is more fashionable than the bolero. And, on the other hand, 'The year of love', with reference to Mina.Songs that even now when I sing them are important moments in concerts. But I think that we all, deep down, know when we're doing the right thing, in the same way you feel that someone you meet will become a part of your life. That's what happened to me with these two songs.

- And do you remember the moment you heard them in the movie?

-It was funny because I knew that the character of Victoria (Abril) would be listening to her in prison and that it would be her mother, i.e. Marisa Paredes, but I didn't know that Miguel Bosé would play them.It was a surprise, I was terrified.

– A modern film, despite the time that has passed.

- It was very important, also in France.I have already been several times, I did a TV program, but Pedro's film opened the door for me to the country where I play a considerable number of concerts every year.

«My way?Work and don't rest on your laurels."

– Not many people know that he has a Goya, which he won in 2002.

-I am not, even if I dedicate myself to it, especially narcissistic or do not have many characteristics that are considered about us.I received all the awards and decorations with gratitude, because it cannot be said, the understanding is a reward for my work, but the next day I was thinking about how to write a certain song or what improvements I should make to a certain melody, that kind of thing. In short: I'm not resting on my laurels.

-It's not nostalgic at all.It has a permanent purpose for the present.

- I think this is a genetic gift for me.(laughs).I think you need passion at work and at the same time some dissatisfaction to push you to improve. For example, achieve a full concert: there is no such thing as a mistake. It rarely happens. You wait until the next night to know if what you didn't do was right or wrong.

- without this requirement being prohibitive.

- Paralysis will be the opposite of what I want to achieve. The other day, for example, I showed my bassist a video of a girl playing jazz, and it was incredible, simple... discovering people like that makes you realize your limits. It is stimulating for me to realize how little I am, that is, how much work I still have to do.concentrates.You can't break up and I can't break up with anything.

- You don't seem to give importance to many things.

– You have to be realistic.I try to stay awake, I try to let life affect me, but there are very few things I think are truly important. In terms of values, what I hate is lying. The moment I discover a liar, he may already be the tallest and most beautiful, and I will almost abandon him forever.

- I think it's part of many things that I have naturally that doesn't change anything, I have a sense of smell.

-And how can you do so many things at once?

- Let time tell.Time is a test of whether or not the works hold together.Sometimes they stay in a drawer because you feel like you've done this song or because you're not convinced. For example, I listened to "Lágrima", by Amália Rodrigues, when I was in Málaga, during the pandemic.Five years have passed since then and I have recorded it now.And I repeat, when I sing every night, that's a song I have to do.I mean: I have no choice but to work every day.

-This album began like this, as a tribute to other important women in music.

- I started with the idea of making an album as an artist, ignoring personal references. Then it became an album of songs sung by women, such as "Everything Changes", whose artist, Mercedes Sosa, knows more than its author. And I took the steps, surprised myself, got into the adventure, although sometimes the adventure has to be overcome... sometimes they are worth it, like Carla Bruni's intervention.

– And he's not too inclined to play duets.

-No, they usually ask me: Who do you want to work with?Well, I don't know! With that (points to the first person passing by).In my case it is not related to the name;Sometimes you don't have a relationship with the person you admire the most or have a different network.

"I'm not a magician, and I don't have many of the traits we associate with them."

- I don't know to ask him who he remembers when he sings: "I hate you so much / That I'm afraid of myself for the way I hate you".

- These are the lines from 'Bravo'.It's not my feeling...but, from time to time, in the four or five people who are not there for me because they have betrayed me.

- Sing and, in the same album, an injection of hope like 'Nothing is Impossible'.

- I spent about eight or nine albums defending myself, and defending myself, I don't use another word, from diversity. How can I do 'Ruffino' and 'You Are Everything'?To do well!I don't see it as a problem as an actor who can do a bad job and a good job, or a sad job and not a job.Music can make a permanent change in you.I can't find another explanation.

- You will see him in good time.

- It seems that I am getting better with time, yes.(Laughs).Some things need not be explained.Sometimes when I meet people I have known for a long time, they say to me: "You are very good, look how bad I am!"

-He is not interested in drama.

- No no.It is not part of my nature. And I learned certain things along the way not to miss green eyes, I don't know, things like that, that there are people who live contentedly. That is, you have the body, the height, the thickness, the color of the eyes, the nature and the genetic information that you have. And I find it very interesting that your ability, your will and your intentions, your vision, are put on the path of improvement.

– Because there is always something missing.

-I was going to tell you how he feels about returning to Malaga, but he never leaves completely.

- I haven't been since Christmas. But yes, I have a big connection. With Andalusia in general, and with Malaga in particular, firstly, because I have a family and you already know.Second, waking up and seeing the sea is a great stimulus for me.I feel good, I like it.And I walk around the city every day.I love everything about isolation.Wonderful things happened to me here day and night.(Laughs).noon and early morning.

– How do you want the people of Cervantes to go out these nights?

- I thought it went well.(Laughs).I am also a member of the public.I know how much effort it takes to get tickets, spend money, go from home to the concert venue... It requires us to be the best.I offer everything with sincerity and dedication so that people can have fun and have fun at the same time, which is worth it.This...at least.
